PENGARUH PEMBERIAN AROMATERAPI LEMON TERHADAP KECEMASAN PASIEN PREOPERASI UROLOGI DI IBS RSUD KOTA YOGYAKARTA

Background: Pre-surgical anxiety is a reaction that occurs in more than 80% of patients who will undergo surgical procedures. Nurses can contribute to reduce patients' anxiety according to their independent authorities, by providing lemon aromatherapy. Cytrus / lemon aromatherapy works to stimulate the olfactory nerve cells and affect the limbic system. The limbic system is the center of pain, pleasure, anger, fear, depression, and other emotions. The hypothalamus, acting as a relay and regulator, sends messages to the brain and other body parts. The messages are converted into action by releasing melatonin and serotonin hormones causing euphoria, relaxation or sedation.

Objective: To determine whether there is an effect of giving lemon aromatherapy on the anxiety of pre-urological surgery patients.

Methods: A quantitative study with a pre-experimental design and a onegroup pre-test and post-test design, conducted at Yogyakarta City Public Hospital. The sample consisted of 26 patients who were given lemon aromatherapy and selected with purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) questionnaire, with Wilcoxon statistical analysis.

Conclusion: Lemon aromatherapy affects the anxiety of pre-urological surgery patients at IBS Yogyakarta City State Hospital.
